Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tesco Price Promise?

When you shop at Tesco, we’ll check your basket against the prices at Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons. If your comparable grocery shopping would have been cheaper there, we’ll give you a voucher for the difference (up to £10).

If you shop in-store, we’ll give you the voucher at the checkout, or if you shop online, we’ll send you an e-mail after your delivery has arrived.

To qualify, you’ll need at least 10 different items, including one comparable grocery item in your basket.

I didn’t get a Tesco Price Promise result – why?

There are two primary reasons why you may not get a Tesco Price Promise result. Check to make sure you:

For further details of what constitutes a ‘different item’ and ‘comparable grocery product’, please refer to our Terms and Conditions.

Does Tesco Price Promise apply to all Tesco stores?

Tesco Price Promise applies to our Metros, Superstores and Extras, and their attached Petrol Filling Stations (though not against fuel) and also applies to Tesco online grocery shops at tesco.com/groceries.

Tesco Express and Tesco Homeplus purchases are not included in Tesco Price Promise. That’s because it’s not possible to fairly compare these store types with Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons large stores and online grocery websites.

Where can I use my Tesco Price Promise voucher?

Good news, your Tesco Price Promise voucher can be redeemed against your shopping in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in Extra, Superstore, Metro and Express stores (or their attached Petrol Filling station, but not against fuel purchases) or online at tesco.com/groceries. It doesn’t matter where you did your original shop.

Are there any products that I cannot buy with my Tesco Price Promise voucher?

There are some products that you cannot use your Tesco Price Promise voucher on. These are fuel, lottery, tobacco or tobacco related products, infant formula, café, pharmacy, gift cards, saving stamps, E-top-ups, stamps, opticians, travel money, Tesco Bank, Tesco Direct, Tesco Wine by the Case, Tesco Clothing (including F&F), and Tesco Phone Shop.

When can I redeem a Tesco Price Promise voucher?

You have 28 days to use the voucher from the day after it is issued; the validity period for vouchers is printed on the voucher.

Does Tesco Price Promise apply to all products?

Tesco Price Promise includes all identical branded grocery products. It also includes own label grocery products where an equivalent is sold at Asda, Sainsbury’s or Morrisons.

There’s more information in our Terms and Conditions and also on our ‘How it Works’ page.

How is a comparable grocery product defined?

“Comparable Grocery Product” is defined as an identical branded grocery product or a similar own-label equivalent grocery product. For similar own-label equivalent grocery products to be included they must meet the same needs or be intended for the same purposes. For example:

Does Tesco Price Promise include promotions?

Yes. We compare price reductions and most promotions – in Tesco and at Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons. Included are:

However, there are some promotions that make it difficult to make a fair comparison – no matter who’s running the offer. The promotions we don’t include are:

What if some comparable products are cheaper, but some are more expensive?

One item may have been cheaper somewhere else. But another item may have been cheaper from us. So to work out the overall difference, we look at all your comparable grocery products.

This ensures that you won’t pay more for your comparable grocery shop than you would at Asda, Sainsbury’s or Morrisons.

Where do you get the Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons prices from?

We use an independent agency to check the prices for us.

Can I see how you worked out my Tesco Price Promise results?

Yes. When you visit Tesco Price Promise online and enter your receipt details, you’ll see your full results.

Why is a product marked ‘n/a’ on my results?

The main reasons why we can’t match some products are:

  1. Tesco has a larger range than Asda, Sainsbury’s or Morrisons, so it's not possible to match everything:

For example, we sell a 500g and 1kg pack of Utterly Butterly. Asda don’t sell Utterly Butterly. If you buy Utterly Butterly, we can’t compare the price with Asda.

  2. Tesco and Asda, Sainsbury’s or Morrisons may stock the same product but in a different size, weight, volume or quality which cannot be fairly matched, because we would have to estimate the comparable price:

For example, we sell an 8, 12 and 24 pack of 330ml Coca Cola. Asda sells an 8, 12, 15 and 30 pack. If you buy our 24 pack, we can’t compare the price with Asda.

  3. Asda or Sainsbury’s may stock a product in store, but it’s not listed on their website:

For example, we sell chicken and sweetcorn sandwiches online, but Sainsbury’s only sell the equivalent sandwich in stores.

All examples were correct as of 13/02/2013.

Is there a maximum value for a Tesco Price Promise voucher?

Yes, £10.

Are there any restrictions on the number of vouchers I can redeem?

We have a Fair Use Policy to make sure everyone gets the benefit of Tesco Price Promise. This states that a household can use up to £100 in Tesco Price Promise vouchers in any calendar month. There’s more information in our Terms and Conditions.

* Morrisons does not have stores in Northern Ireland. As a result, the Tesco Price Promise only applies to Asda and Sainsbury’s in Northern Ireland.
